Day of Service
Roosevelt elementary fifth grade
On the Day of Service, several University of Mary Math Club members and myself went to Roosevelt Elementary in Mandan and did various math activities. My group did a demonstration and activity on the Four Color Theorem. This was a really rewarding experience as it was very nice to see young children learn to see math in a positive light. I hope the new perspective the other Math Club members and myself made will have a lasting impact on these kids' perception of math and learning as a whole. My hope is by changing their perception while in elementary school has a positive impact on their outlook on math throughout their education and life.
Special Olympics
North Dakota State Special Olympics Bowling
During my freshmen and sophomore years of college I had the great joy of volunteering during the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament. As part of my volunteering experience, I primarily ensured that all reasonable accommodations were being met to help the athletes bowl. In addition, I also provided support and encouragement as they competed. I especially enjoyed watching the joy on the athletes faces as they achieved success while bowling. I only hope that I had as big of an impact on the athletes day as they did on my life.
Devils Lake High School
Presentation on Mental Health
As part of the junior ELA class, we went to Devils Lake High School and gave several discussions and presentations on various topics. The topic that Kiaya and I did was on mental health. As part of this presentation we laid out some strategies and remediations students could use if they felt they were struggling with mental health. In addition, we also made sure to let the kids know that if they were struggling with mental health that they were not alone as many kids have struggles with mental health. Overall, I think our presentation was a success and I believe it had a positive impact on the kids we gave it to.
Puerto Rico Mission Trip
Mayagüez Puerto Rico- FOCUS Misssions
My sophomore year of college I was given the opportunity to go on a mission trip to Mayaguez Puerto Rico over Christmas break. As part of this mission trip our goal was to impact the people of Mayaguez through sport (volleyball and baseball). In addition, our mission was also faith based so we spent time trying to spread the word and grow the parish. The area we were in was a less fortunate area of town so we made it a goal to enrich their lives beyond worrying about money. I hope the people of Mayaguez were as impacted from me as I was from them.
